In order to support Air University's (AU) educational mission, they are implementing a new, integrated Student Information System (SIS) and Learning Management System (LMS) solution to support over 220,000 users worldwide. The purpose of the integrated SIS/LMS is to increase the capability and capacity of the AU learning environment. SIS/LMS required commercial government cloud services that could support Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Level 4 and DoD Authority to Operate (ATO) security control requirements. Air University's stated objectives were that commercially hosting the integrated solution will improve security, integrity and reliability of active and archival records.
Smartronix responded to AU's request for proposal and was awarded the work in May of 2017. Smartronix proposed hosting the solution on Microsoft Azure Government to ensure the AU solution would meet FedRAMP and Impact Level 4 security requirements. The developed hosting environment consists of integrated environments designated as Development, Testing and Production that support development, integration, acceptance testing, training, staging, troubleshooting and all preproduction as well as production activities. The Azure Gov environment contains all required security, service delivery and hosting capabilities necessary to support Impact Level 4 now with the ability to support Impact Level 5 for future workloads.
Smartronix provided access to a turn-key cloud-based platform with various service level guarantees. The hosting environment is accessible to the diverse Air University student population which consists of military, non-military, and civilian personnel including some international students from both .com and .mil networks. The forms of authentication required to access the hosting environment include both PKI and user name and password.
Other key objectives met by the solution include: 1) FedRAMP IL 4 Managed Services support; 2) Backup services; 3) Site recovery services; 4) Mulitple tiered storage options (Page Blob, Disk, Premium SSD etc.) 5) Management VNETs; 6) Log aggregation services; and 7) Load balanced elastic services.
